For what it's worth to younger artists, I am never satisfied with any of my work immediately after I finish it. No one wants to eat the sausage right after making it I guess. But if I put the song a shelf for 3 or 4 months and come back to it, it's like removing the "me" from it and I can hear it more impartially.

Not everyone has that problem but if you do, my experience agrees with Warren's. Don't be afraid to turn your attention to something else for awhile.

Most underrated advice. Take a break. It's as simple as that.

Back in the day I had to get off of music for a few months but I immediately noticed that the break was what I really needed. Mixes got a lot better, composition started to make more sense, sound design choices were clear to make etc.

I called it audio ears. You literally only have maybe an hour or two of critical listening before things just all start to blur together. Exactly like Warren said, you’ll pull it up later and it will be obvious. Taking breaks is essential

For me it's about differentiating between when mixing the song begins to be chasing minutia. At a point along that line I begin to lose the song and can only hear the inconsequential tweaks only I, as the mixer, can hear. Everyone else, save for a few, are listening to the song. When we, as mixers lose that, it's time for a break. How many times have we returned to an early mix only to recognize how far astray we often become. Early mixes are often more relevant to the song mostly because we are reacting more like an audience in early passes and end up reacting better to the song than to the mix details.
