Great horned Owls mating calls

preview_player
Показать описание
Great horned owls nest during the months of January and February. During mating season, male and female great horned owls hoot back and forth to each other in a duet. Their mating rituals also include bowing to each other and rubbing bills. When ready to nest, they do not build their own nest but instead seek out existing sites such as the nests of other birds, squirrel nests, tree holes, crevices in rocks and nooks in buildings. Some great horned owls mate for many years.

Clutch size varies with latitude, weather, and food supply, but generally, are two or three eggs. When prey is available, nesting begins earlier in the year; in leaner years, nesting is later and sometimes owls will not lay eggs during very poor years.

Every winter, these guys come around my house. For the last two years, they haven’t, and now they are back! I’m so glad!

I live in Arizona and there was one making this sound when I was on the porch right above my head on the awning.I used this video to talk to it and I could hear it's foot steps walking closer and closer to me from above. It was about 3 feet away from me. When I looked at it from the steps it was HUGE and pitch white and then it finally flew off without making a sound. It's wing span was like almost 4 feet. I never seen anything so beautiful b4. Thanks for helping me with the experience

True story: Called one in from our balcony at night. We lived on the edge of open space and I was hearing it vocalize down the incline from our house maybe 1, 000 to 2, 000 feet away. I imitated its call, and I noticed that when it answered it was getting successively closer (as it was following my sound). This raised my excitement! Then I saw something sweep across the stars silently over my backyard. I turned on my spotlight and there it was, staring directly at me from the top of the neighbor's tree with those big yellow eyes. Up close and big as life. So cool! It was motionless for a while, and I felt like I was on Animal Planet. Then, after a minute or so, it just silently lifted off and flew away. Before this incident I didn't know if it was really true that they could be called in by imitating their sound. Now I do!

I’m here because I have one of these little guys near my house. Funny thing is, I live in Moncton, New Brunswick. Moncton is a city. But my house backs onto a small patch of forest so I think the owl is in there somewhere. I’ve heard him a few times now. Mostly around 12:30/1:00ish in the morning. Currently listening to him hoot now. It’s a peaceful sound!

We have a couple of these owls that visit our yard almost nightly. Sometimes one sometimes two. Lately I’ve been hearing these same sounds. Came hear to confirm what I was hearing all these years. Thanks for the vid!
