Electricity demand soared to a record high  in Argentina, Uruguay and Peru this month as people attempted to keep cool amid an exceptional summer heatwave.

In Argentina, the surge in electricity demand exacerbated an already volatile market as prices jumped up  to $333 per MWh, among the highest the country has ever seen.

Extreme weather events, driven by climate change, can put huge strains on our electricity systems. Robust and secure grids can help manage volatile demand.
