There are so many great films in the Disney vault, and it’s hard not to be excited when one of them gets a remake. But many eyebrows have been raised by the fact that Tim Burton is directing a new Dumbo movie. We loved the movie just as much child, but there’s no denying that it hasn’t aged well. There’s the whole crow issue, and the fact that the premise of the story is pretty dark and disturbing. We’ll talk about the true story of the real Jumbo, and how tragic and brief his life was in the circus. If you think about it, the whole baby elephant being separated from his mother thing is unbelievably tragic, and it’s sort of baffling that it ever got made into a children’s movie in the first place. Why wouldn’t we want to raise awareness to animal cruelty? It’s as if everyone in society avoids it but when it is brought to the light by film makers, it is “disturbing”... this actually happens in real life and a lot of people don’t realize that, shining light will only raise awareness to others so that we can actually do something about it rather than ignore it..

I'm excited for the movie because Dumbo was my favorite movie growing up. I've never been to a circus so I really didn't know about this stuff, it's so sad people and animals were treated this way.

I appreciate how historically accurate the original Dumbo is. According to my dad even the "Pink Elephants" thing was a historical reference.

Dumbo is actually a realistic portrayal of how circus elephants were treated. I think the movie is completely honest about it in a way that children should be aware of. I think it encourages better treatment of elephants and animals by seeing things from their point of view. I think dumbo is one of the main reasons I never wanted to go to the circus as a child. I saw the movie as a young kid. I remember how sad Dumbo and his mother were and so I didn’t want to go to the circus and watch elephants who could be unhappy. There are things in the movie that are educational to know how things use to be and how much we have grown and changed.

I always think it's important to draw attention to culturally sanctioned cruelty. Not because it's something to condone through normalization, but because it awakens the sense of compassion for other sentient beings. Despite any differences. We all identify with some part of the Dumbo story, because it speaks to our sense of what is wrong with with cultural normalization of treating the 'other' like something less than the status quo. (This isn't the most eloquently worded, but I hope you understand my perspective).

I think that Disneyland will use the new Dumbo to correct the appalling bad portions of the original movie. I'm sure that they will take the opportunity to make the morale of the story about the right way to treat animals.
