Check out this amazing find while scuba diving in a Florida river - a dire wolf premolar! This ancient canine species roamed North America during the Ice Age, and this fossilized tooth provides a fascinating glimpse into their past.

Did you know that dire wolves were not actually wolves, but a distinct species of canid that was closely related to modern-day wolves? They were bigger and heavier than gray wolves, with more massive skulls and stronger jaws. Their powerful build allowed them to take down large prey like bison and horses, making them top predators in their ecosystem.

There are modern timber wolves that weigh over 150. Hell I have a St Bernard mix that weighs 120. I’d think dire wolves would weigh closer to 200 or more

Is that a specimen you collected yourself? I collaborate with the North American Canine Ancestry project run out of Princeton. We are seeking samples from SE US canid specimens for DNA high resolution sequencing. The roots on this specimen look robust. Was this specimen found in water?

So dire wolves were smaller than a lot of our house pets?
