I swear that I thought that he was in a wheelchair when I first started the video.

Friction/grip will always limit the braking performance. We only maybe have a 20mm wide contact patch. It remarkable how well a road bike can brake really

When braking hard, 100% load is on the front wheel. Never had the front skidding but going over the handlebars instead lol. But I had brakes overheating, and fading, so yeah size does matter (unless you’re maybe 50kg)

Bro I got stock mechanical Tektros‘ on my Gravel; don‘t talk about the tires… 😂

Absolutely agreed. Our lives depend on the rubbers, be it a bike or a car, and we give way little importance to the tires. ✌🏾

Tyre pressure is key before upgrading your tyres

When he said limiting factor i instantly thought of limiting factors in photosynthesis 💀💀

So rim brakes are ok if tyres are better

I live in the mountains and thus half my rides are descents, the thing that is most important is the ability to dose braking so the wheel doesn't lock up. Any type of brakes disc/rim will allow you to lock up the wheel, but it is the ability to dose to remain just before the point of locking up that will give you the maximum brake performance.

It is true that good tires will help with not locking up the wheel, but I strongly believe that bigger rotors/pads etc. do help giving better brake dosing control and thus better braking performance.

Here I thought the best upgrade was a Dura Ace crankset, especially one from your cubbard! 😂

I think what you are saying that’s what limits your maximum stopping power, but the usability and ease of braking before the limit is significantly enhanced by bigger rotors and better calipers. I rarely ever find locking up to be an issue, but definitely experienced brake fade and hand pain on a long decline on underpowered brakes.

I downsized my rear rotor to 140mm and now I have more control over the respective brake. There is more lever travel before the wheel just locks up.

Im thinking of going feom 160 to 180 in front on my roadie. Im 100kg, and ride the alps. So i get alot of brake fade and noise on longer steep downhill sections.

I always thought this, I’ve always been able to lock my wheels and skid with rim brakes, so never saw the reason for increased brake power. Yay! I will be able to start skidding easier.

I was thinking brake blocks!! 😂 seriously! SwissStop I have found the best for road. About to try out SwissStop for V brakes on touring bike. Had to switch out old Deore LX for XT as there was no stopping power on steep inclines due to pannier weight.

It's a bit more complicated than that.... But he's got a point

System weight, contact patch size, quality of tyre.

Usually when braking to hard on a bicycle the front wheel doesn't lose traction.
It will rotate you plus the bike till your helmet takes over.
Helmets though slide pretty easily, so I suggest upgrading your helmet first.

We knew you'd come back to rim brakes.

Ok but what’s with the yellow calipers tho
