Lake Lure Dam 'high hazard' and needed repairs at time Helene hit

According to multiple records WBTV found on the Town of Lake Lure’s webpage, the dam does not meet current state safety requirements.

It is good that the dam did not fail despite the overtopping. The engineers 100 years did a good job on the design and construction. That does not mean that it did not have damage and will be able to withstand the next flood. I hope that they do a careful analysis.

Instead of the usual comment arguments how about we take a minute to appreciate the engineers that originally built this nearly 100 year old Dam that withstood water pressure levels and speed of which were not intended for the structure hats off to the boys who designed and built it

This story completely misses the point. The dam wasn't threatened because of the construction upgrades. Instead, it was the erosion on the road to the side. They don't even talk about this.

Imagine going on an infrastructure spenging spree almost 80-100 years ago, and then not putting up the money to maintain a lot of it. Nobody in their right mind would do that, right?

Wish we could recycle debris. Seems dams are important. Hope they can be thoughtful of the environment too. Thinking of people there! I've seen some amazing stories. People are really helping each other & working hard.

Lets year flood happens, the dam is overtopped but yet still stands. Sounds like there isn't anything wrong with it. It passed the biggest real stress test possible.
