Fantastic Michael we still celebrate Walpurgis Night here in the Czech Republic 😮😊

Didn't know about this. But it makes sense as a dramatic prelude to the story. You see it in movies all the time: the first danger to someone then the actual protagonist begins and we are aware of what may await.

"Denn die Todten reiten scnell" ("For the dead travel fast"). Is forever seared into my mind. good stuff.

Nice read! I heard this story at age 10 having got a cassette read by Victor Garber (who reads it very well) - the funny thing is I got really engaged with the story, turned the tape over and thought I got ripped of a proper ending because side B had Stoker's "The Secret of the Growing Gold", but the tape did nothing to advertise that, wanting to lean into the Dracula brand. LOL
I love when the storm is mounting, and his English Bravado quickly crumples away. Then the Countess's tomb opens...🥶and a invisible giant's hand throws back out and lightnings her up! Is that supposed to be the hand of God saving him - a more direct interference then happens in the novel? Or does Dracula himself have such power, at least on _walpurgisnacht_? And i think Dracula is meant to be the wolf, who didn't want to bring to Munich personally.

Well done Michael. Although this is considered a fairly minor Stoker tale, I've always liked its growing tension and the awful irony of Harker feeling that he's been saved from a terrible fate and thus is able to continue his journey to meet the Count (I've always assumed it to be Jonathan Harker although the main character's name is not mentioned). And of course the abandoned "unholy village" and the character of Countess Dolingen are clear inspirations for Hammer Pictures' wonderfully over-the-top vampire movies of the 1970s featuring the undead Karnsteins.

BTW, in German, J's are pronounced like a Y, more like: "Yohan answered with an emphatic "Ya, mein herr!""

Have you ever narrated audiobooks? You might want to look into it, you have the voice and an engaging presentation. I really enjoy your channel, because of you I have much less money than I did before finding you… and a lot more books.

Dracula's guest is always leaving about an inch left in the blood bottle in the refrigerator and squeezing the fangpaste from the top of the tube.

I’ve finally read Dracula due to your videos, and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. I really liked it a lot and found it engaging and suspenseful. It was a lot like Jaws insofar as the dangerous element is hardly present. The mere potential for danger at any time was enough to form a sense of foreboding. I found it difficult to put the book down when I had to stop reading for the evening. In any case, I owe you a debt of gratitude for inspiring me to dive into this book. Many thanks!

Excellent! Have already listened to it twice. Definitely not Jonathan Harker. 🖤
