National Anthem of Canada (Retro version): O Canada [pre-1980 lyrics]

Welcome to my first retro-style video!

O Canada is the national anthem of Canada since 1980. It was composed in 1880 by Calixa Lavallée and written by Adolphe-Basile Routhier in French, and by Robert Stanley Weir, in 1908, in English. It became the de facto National Anthem of Canada in 1939, serving with God Save the Queen as Royal Anthem.
In this adaptation of the anthem, the lyrics are those that were used prior to 1980

FRANÇAIS: Ô Canada est l'hymne national du Canada depuis 1980. Ça a été composé en 1880 par Calixa Lavallée et écrit par Adolphe-Basile Routhier en français, et plus tard par Robert Stanley Weir, en 1908, en anglais. C'est devenu l'hymne national de facto du Canada en 1939, avec Dieu protège la Reine, comme l'hymne royal.
Dans cette adaptation de l'hymne, on entend les paroles anglaises utilisées avant l'année 1980.

I was born in Canada in 1963 and this is the anthem I learned in school and sang. I had a hard time finding this version (“in all thy son’s command”) as it seems it’s been disappeared from Canadian history. Glad I found this, it’s weird to know lyrics you grew up singing and now feeling like you’re wrong every time you hear the current version.

Never the official national anthem strictly speaking, only the 1980 version was given the status, but the anthem we all knew it to be and the version we sang daily when I was in grade school in the late 70s. Beautiful version, and a montage to make a man weep. Thanks.
