I don't see how the Russian approach requires more "thinking" than the American one. They both require the student to memorize what appear to be arbitrary patterns. This issue here is not they amount of thinking required, but rather that it is very difficult to for the novice student to see how these patterns relate to the resulting determinant. They both seem to produce the result "mathemagically".

The so-called American method demonstrated here is actually called the _Rule of Sarrus_ and it was discovered by an obscure 19th century French mathematician named Pierre Frédéric Sarrus.
