Tesla Cybertruck Towing Cybertruck Cross Country!! 2,400 Mile Road Trip Towing 10k Lbs.

My Tesla Cybertruck delivery was a miracle all in itself. It was a recipe of "right place at the right time" and I was so fortunate to be able to take delivery of my brand new Foundation Series Cybertruck while I was in Salt Lake City picking up another Tesla Cybertruck that needed to be delivered to Florida.

With 2 Cybertrucks in hand, the decision was quickly made to tow my Cybertruck with the other Cybertruck that I was supposed to drive to Florida anyways. We had a trailer, we had the Cybertruck, all we had to do was deliver the duo 2,400 miles away in Central Florida.

The original trip was planned to pick up the EVject Cybertruck in Salt Lake City and deliver it to Orlando, FL for a Make A Wish event. This was a simple 2,400 mile trip, although it was with the new Tesla Cybertruck and would be a great opportunity to learn about the road tripping capabilities of the next generation Tesla. Little did any of us know, we would actually have the chance to tow nearly the full towing capacity of the Cybertruck all the way across the country.

Coming in at 9,546 lbs, this load is near the top of the towing capacity of the truck, which is 11,000 lbs. With plenty of experience towing over the years, I felt comfortable with the setup and getting the truck loaded, secured and balanced on the trailer was easy enough. After getting acquainted with the pre-sets for tow mode on the Cybertruck, it was time to set off across the country.

What I learned very quickly on this trip is that the middle of this country lacks volume, and modern chargers. Although Tesla boasts the most reliable charging network, which was once again realized on this road trip, in the middle of the country, its mostly V2 (150 kW max) and/or spaced too far out to be able to charge less at each stop. Because of this, I was needing to charge between 90 and 100% for most of the trip, certainly the first half.

The things I thought I wouldn't like about the Cybertruck for towing ended up being some of the shining features of the truck. For starters, I really thought 4 wheel steer was going to be super awkward backing a trailer, but it turned out to be amazing at backing a trailer, and even more amazing at the tight turning radius this thing was capable of. No other truck I have ever towed with could come close to the maneuverability of this truck.

Next, I wasn't so sure about the trailer brake situation with the Cybertruck. But it turns out that having the manual brake set to the right scroll wheel on the Cybertruck was actually amazing and super convenient. When you think about it, a traditional trailer brake has a manual toggle but it is a reach away from the steering wheel. On the Cybertruck, it's right there on the wheel, meaning it's easy to get to and effective.

I was unfortunately met with bad weather pretty much the whole trip, and coupled with climbing mountains numerous times, the range was less than I had expected. That said, overall the range was a theoretical 125-ish miles on average. Some stretches more, some stretches less. I believe my best stretch of the trip would have been the equivalent of 140 miles range at 100%.

Although I was towing near the top end of the capacity, I was hoping to see the bottom end of range closer to 150 miles. Taking away the head winds and mountains, I think the Cybertruck was certainly capable of getting at least 150 miles on a charge, but the more important thing I discovered on this trip was having accessible chargers for towing, at 60-ish miles apart, was more important than range. Charging for an hour or so at every stop was extremely painful, and took my usual 1k miles per day all the way down to about 600 miles a day tops.

All things considered, we still have a ways to go before long distance towing with EV's is convenient. If it's shorter distance, there's no other truck I would rather tow with than the highly maneuverable, powerful, and capable Tesla Cybertruck!

You have a rolling backup battery in case of running out. Awesome.

Great video! I watched the whole thing straight through. It looks like your charging costs averaged about 33¢ a mile. That's not bad at all, considering the weight you were towing and some of the terrain on your trip. A couple of years ago, I towed a GMC Canyon pickup on a trailer with my 2002 GMC Yukon XL Denali from Cape Cod, MA to Lake City, FL. I averaged 11 mpg. At an average of $3.50 per gallon for regular gas, it came out almost exactly what your cost per mile was. Interesting. Thanks for posting this video. I learned a lot and enjoyed riding along with you.

I get stressed enough, at busy Superchargers, with a Model3. I can’t imagine how’d I’d do with two Cybertrucks. You’re a patient man and an excellent driver.

Awesome hard-core towing test. Efficiency was surprisingly better than I expected! Great video!

I love watching your road trips but the one thing that triggers my OCD is how long you delay plugging in. When I hit the charger I don’t do anything till I’m plugged in and charging.

This is why even Tesla messed up on the port location. The Cybertruck (and all trucks) should have it on the passenger front so you can pull in to any V3 (or V2) while towing without blocking another stall.

I live in Kansas City, Missouri and frequently commute to Jefferson City and pass through Columbia. Came here to say that the Clark Ln supercharger is the best in Columbia. However, Bandannas is DEFINITELY not the best BBQ in Missouri. Try Q39 in KC.

Great video. Love watching these road trips.

“I don’t know how it got loose but it did and I fixed it.”
^Smart trailering 👍. Always double check the load and the wheel hubs. Stuff happens with trailers.

Wow, you got experience one of the most challenging and dangerous stretches of highway (US-6 Utah and I-70 Mountain passes Colorado) during a snow storm and at night. You did well for a flat lander 👍.

That was a fun and exciting journey. We have a Model X and rarely open the Falcon doors, but when we do, they tend to draw more attention than we prefer. I can only imagine the CT (*2)!

First of all, I actually watched the entire video.Great video dude. I am interested in the cyber trucks towing, but my need would be to tow a camper. How do you think that would have been a far as range. A camper would have been less weight (depending on the exact camper) but the camper would probably have more wind resistance. You have experience towing a 3500lb camper with your model Y. How do you thing the cybertruck would have done as far as range towing that exact same camper?

Great video. Awesome effort. Think I'm going with the Silverado EV but it looks like the Cyber truck does well. Thank you.

I would already own an electric truck if it weren't for the long distance towing problem. We want to be able to take our Airstream out West a couple times a year and needing to stop every 120 miles just wouldn't cut it. It already takes way too long to drive that far, but needing to stop and charge for an hour or more so frequently, would make the trip not worth while.
I'm anxiously awaiting the day that batteries become affordable enough to give us 300 miles of range while towing. That would be a game changer.

THis is insane, drive 1 hours charge 1 hours...drive 1 hour..charge 1 hours ...or more...Video just too long to watch all of it, but I did like it. You proved to me I would never buy and EV to tow or travel no matter how cool they look....
