I "invented" my own scale about a year ago. Turns out it's a Locrian scale with a couple passing notes. I (of course) had no clue, LOL. My guitar teacher identified it in seconds...but *I still invented my own scale* dagnabit 😠🏴‍☠️☠️

I like this guy. He's strong and direct but he's not an asshole. He gave some of the best advise I've ever heard in all my years as a player, (I paraphrase) "Play things that people can connect with." Brilliant! Well done man.

the ending was on point! bad notes can sound awesome too. it's not the scale, or the key.. it's the context! and nobody teaches you that. that's how you become a good musician

Man I've been trying to learn guitar for years but I keep losing motivation and giving up so now I've decided instead of starting out with all the stuff they recommend like barre chords and open shapes I'm gonna learn to do what I started playing to do and shred. Once I can shred over some basic chord progressions with a fair few scales then I'll have built a foundation of knowledge. So when I go to learn the other stuff, which I will do, and I get frustrated, which I will do, I'll always have that foundation to fall back on and stay motivated.

Don't get me wrong I think people should absolutely learn how to do as much on the guitar as possible and experiment in other genres but if everyone built that foundation of stuff they love first then I think a lot less people would quit.

Great lessons Scott, what has helped me a lot is listening to all the Castlevania video game music. From the old melodies to the newest ones, now I can understand that the made a whole cool song with a 1 minute loop over just one chord. Some songs have orchestra now, but some are very simple and sound like Bach or Vivaldi. Thanks for the video.

What scale do you think sounds the most “metal”?

Dude. Just found your channel/video yesterday as I am a lifelong metal head who is now attempting to learn guitar. Hilarious content and incredibly fun which makes learning that much better. Keep it up Shredder!! 🤘😈👹

Amazing video! I like that you show how to play the scales horizontally on the guitar!

I must say that you Rock! I'm the drummer of the disbanded "Psychosis " (Massacre Records) with no way to let loose where I live, so I'm shreading on my brother's Squire affinity. I hung out with my guitar players back in the day (like when Rising force/ marching out was shining and new) and bothered them until they showed me some Yngwie licks that I absolutely had to know. I never learned an entire song, only some cool intros and scales. As a tone deaf drummer I was showing off to a new bass player that I could play guitar and he took my left hand as I was playing and moved it up a half step and all of a sudden it sounded good!

I learned saxophone by just playing scales over and over again. It's how I teach myself the notes on the fret board.

I find my self using the pattern the scales make more than remembering the scale letter by letter. The shape. I suppose some call it the caged system. But you can make a hell of a lot of time riffs that sounds good even if you just memorize the shape of scales and to me makes it more accessible because you’re not thinking where the notes are. Especially helps writing black metal. And even other music like punk and oi. Even find my self using it to make hardcore music.

Thank you bearded guitar man, you rock!

Thank you for the last part where you suggest that you don't always need or want all the "right" notes on a scale for something you are playing.... As long as the feeling and soul is there, is what really matters

The one I use The most and like the most is the dime scale. Dorian add b5. 1, 2, b3, 4, 5, b5, 6, b7.

Because of South park I have always referred to finger tapping as finger banging! In metal we finger bang those solos
