South China Sea Clashes: China-Philippines Clash Ignites Conflict Fears | Vantage with Palki Sharma

The situation in the South China Sea is heating up after a violent confrontation between the Philippine Navy and the Chinese Coast Guard on Monday. The incident, which is by far the most dangerous escalation yet, has raised fears of a wider conflict in the region. Philippine officials allege that Chinese Coast Guard vessels surrounded a Philippine Navy boat near the Second Thomas Shoal, a disputed territory in the South China Sea. According to the Philippines, Chinese personnel threatened Filipino sailors with axes and swords, boarded the vessel, and damaged it with machetes and knives. Eight Filipino sailors were injured, with one losing his thumb. Beijing, on the other hand, claims the Philippine vessel was trespassing in Chinese territory and that their Coast Guard acted with restraint to stop an illegal supply mission.
