Tensions are rising in the South China sea as Filipino soldiers clash with the Chinese Coast Guard in disputed territorial waters. So in this video, we'll explain the history of the region, why things have escalated and why this is bad news for stability.

Our mission is to explain news and politics in an impartial, efficient, and accessible way, balancing import and interest while fostering independent thought.

TLDR is a completely independent & privately owned media company that's not afraid to tackle the issues we think are most important. The channel is run by a small group of young people, with us hoping to pass on our enthusiasm for politics to other young people. We are primarily fan sourced with most of our funding coming from donations and ad revenue. No shady corporations, no one telling us what to say. China is also using ancient maps from the Ming Dynasty (1300s) to assert their claims. Well if they want to use Ming Dynasty maps, then return Tibet to the Tibetans, because according to the Ming Dynasty map, Tibet is not China

“If one day China should change her colour and turn into a superpower, if she too should play the tyrant in the world, and everywhere subject others to her bullying, aggression and exploitation, the people of the world should identify her as social-imperialism, expose it, oppose it and work together with the Chinese people to overthrow it.”
— Deng Xiaoping addressing the UN general assembly in 1974

"disputed' in the south china sea is like someone walking into your house and saying it's disputed who owns it.

Note: Freedom of Navigation naval exercises began in 2011 under Obama when China started dredging reefs In The SCS. This did not begin or even ramp up with Trump

And some clarification to our fellow international and local viewers who are not informed or confused.

The WPS (West Philippine Sea) is a part of the South China Sea that resides within the Philippine EEZ. WE ARE NOT claiming the entirety of the South China Sea, as we only use the phrase "WPS" to assert our rightful claims within our own EEZ as further reinforced by the 2016 Arbitral Tribunal.

China aspires to be the hegemon in this region; yet repeatedly, it engages in acts of bullying and harassment towards its neighboring countries, such as Japan, India, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Bhutan. How can it expect to garner support when it fails to foster peaceful coexistence and cooperation? It baffles me since this behavior drives these countries to move towards the West, a consequence entirely of China's own provocations.

The U.S. freedom of navigation exercises are obviously not hypocritical. Whether the US ratifies the Law of the Sea or not, they still assert they have the right to sail in those waters.

What IS hypocritical is China having signed on to respect those boundaries and then not respecting those boundaries.
