Easiest way to give someone the concept of how a torque converter works in basic form, is put a fan infront of another fan facing each other, and turn on one of the fans. The airflow from one fan will cause the blades of the other fan to spin. This is the same concept but instead of using air to flow over to the other fan, the torque converter does this will fluid to cause the same effect.

You didnt talk about the torque converter lockup clutch that locks the converter in and out 1:1 to reduce heat and improve fuel economy

I think there would be a lot of efficiency loss in this design. Fluids have such low friction.

Torque converter has a reliability of a CVT and driveability of almost a DCT...!!! Best best gearbox for any car.
