how to change or set the root password in any linux distribution(ubuntu, linux mint etc)

I installed Ubuntu 18 for Raspberry Pi and right after it boots it asked for a password, I can not even get into the terminal mode or anything. Any ideas or suggestions?

didn't work in Solus 3. maybe because I want to use a PIN number and the default GUI wizard won't let me use a 4 digit password.

I got as far as root and it wouldn't let me put in a new password. I wonder if it because I am working on an external hard drive? I have two os on it Linux Mint and Zorin 16 both working with no problems) I am trying to install Virtual Box but it won't let me install the extension pak due to not being a super user, which brought me to your site. I think I am over my head when something goes wrong, but I like the challenge to resolve them. Hope you can help me. Thanks in advance. You give very good and easy to follow instructions.
