With Nick’s shady past, it’s likely he’s had run ins with whatever group likes that symbol. Instead of knowing Francis like some people weirdly say, it’s more likely it’s a criminal kreed/group that people associate with, and it’s common courtesy for them to show at least some form of respect for them.

I heard a theory that they're from the same criminal group. The difference is Francis is a part of the biker gang part of the group, and Nick is probably doing crimes like fraud, extortion, robbery. The group is probably big enough that even they don't recognise each other, hence the fight in The Passing.

Oh they did time together and where in the same prison gang, Francis was set free after he did his time, Nick was been transported to another prison when the zombie outbreak started and one of the guards start eating the driver the buss with the inmates crash, Nick was able to escape and found a tailor shop that were looted and the white suit was the only thing left and that's why the suit is way too big for Nick.
