You can find out if it's out of square without a known good square.
Simply place one edge (a) against a straight edge of a board, draw a line along edge b, then flip square so edge a remains on same straight edge, but edge b is on othet side of the line you drew, if line and edge aren't parallel, the error is half the difference

It would be better if you bought one made out of steel instead of the typical cheap aluminum ones.
