Making a block of perfectly clear ice

Regular ice is usually filled with bubbles, and I think it's really ugly. What I want is some beautiful ice that's perfectly clear, and I'm gonna try to make some.

As someone who used to do ice sculpting for a few years it amazes me how simple yet complicated Nile makes it seem*.
You can actually freeze a large tub of water to be completely clear by freezing it however you want, but by using something like a water fountain pump angled to circulate the top of the water.
This will keep the bubbles and impurities from the tap water moving around enough for it to freeze clear about 3/4th of the container.

The best method we used for making flat clear ice was then to just use some regular clothes irons on a sheet of aluminum and then rub the ice on that once it’s hot

And extra fun fact, if you take two pieces of ice that are nice and flat, you can stick them back together and they will freeze as one solid piece

If i remember correctly, the Mythbusters did something like this. It was shown if put something to vibrate the water. It prevents bubbles from forming even better.

The science behind it: Tap water contains microscopic impurities, usually in the form of dissolved minerals. These tiny particles create nucleation sites for ice to start crystalizing on. Due to this uneven crystalization, the final ice appears cloudy and opaque while trapped air creates bubbles. However, when in the freezer, the denser impurities sink to the bottom in a process called cold crashing. That means the top part of the water has almost no dissolved impurities that could cause uneven ice formation and any gases don't get trapped inside the ice, resulting in clear ice.

This is called directional solidification and is a purification technology (contaminants get pushed out as the liquid-solid interface moves) and can be up to 99.9% efficient at purification. As an engineer I used to do this with silicon for a living. It's related to but distinctly different than the czochkralski method for growing silicon crystals to be sawn into wafers.
