Why did John Lennon compare The Beatles to Jesus Christ?

Fun fact - The racing driver Emmerson Fittipaldi lead George Harrison to Christ during his final few months battling cancer. They were apparently great mates. George was always searching for meaning to life and thank God he finally found The Truth. There's a YT video of Emmerson giving the testimony to a Brazillian pastor/church a few years back if anyone's interested.

This is like saying the party on the 10th floor of a building is more important that the foundation of the building. The party may seem like that's where it is at, but the foundation supports the party and everything that comes after. Lennon had the insufferable trait of being arrogant and ignorant.

Looking back 50 years with what is admittedly 20-20 hindsight, Lennon was largely wrong. Christianity has grown in much of the world in the last half-century, particularly in Africa and Asia, and particularly in places where it was previously prohibited, such as China. And for all the headlines about fewer people going to church here in the U.S., it remains a country where the majority identify as Christian. If there's one place where Lennon's prediction HAS come close to coming true, it's in his native western Europe, where the church has indeed shrunk significantly in the last few decades (even if it hasn't quite "disappeared").

I always thought he just meant that the Beatles were more popular with the youth generation, which was undoubtedly true. He didn’t say the Beatles were superior to Jesus or God. He was simply stating a fact, not a value judgment. The pop culture of the world will always be more enticing to society, but Jesus is not of this world.

In January 1967, Paul McCartney announced "There is no God, there is no Soul, and I'm just one of the wizards that's going to sort out society." This appears in the International Times, as run by Peter Asher (his sister is Jane Asher, his father was Richard Asher, who committed suicide in his house, but they couldn't find him for 3 days), Barry Miles, and John Dunbar.

This is less than 6 months after he has just seen John Lennon's statements about Jesus Christ, create furor in certain sections of America. And these statements weren't even as inflammatory.

And I am shocked that you can find files on George Harrison and John Lennon from both the FBI and CIA, but very little, if at all about McCartney. And what McCartney has stated in January 1967, makes him FBI and CIA enemy number one in that Cold War that is supporting sending troops to Vietnam to fight the spread of such ideals, and keeping it out of America. And the rest of the world if possible. McCartney's statement literally seems to have evaporated to irrelevance, whereas Lennon's statement, which wasn't incorrect, nor was meant as insult to Jesus Christ, or Religion, has endured and is a pivotal moment in their history. It was a comment about Fame. If Lennon had said soon after "There is no God, there is no Soul, and I'm just one of the wizards that's going to sort out society", the press would have been on that in a heartbeat, and he most definitely would have been in the eyesight of the FBI and CIA.

But McCartney is also the Beatle that can disappear and go completely underground while sequestered in central London for TWO MONTHS between September and November 1966, and go completely undetected. No photographs. No press. No appearances. No gigs. NOTHING. A Beatle capable of doing this in 1966, should not need a Mal Evans to help him survive leaving hotel rooms and cars. Because Ringo Starr cannot go on holiday with Maureen Starkey in Spain without the press knowing it. Nor can he join up with John Lennon who is filming a movie in Spain, which the press know about. Nor can John Lennon come back from Spain without being photographed exiting the plane. And George Harrison can't go to India without the press knowing where he is.

Why do they keep wanting to know where they are? Cuz they're Beatles. But also because by August 1966, their contract with Brian Epstein had not been renegotiated. And the press are hounding whomever they can find to ask are The Beatles leaving Epstein, or are they breaking up. Between September and November 1966, this is all the press want to know. Plus Northern Songs Ltd. is a public company on the open stock market. Any shake up in management is going to cause those stocks to fall.

Brian Epstein has already dealt with Allen Klein back in 1964, and rejected an offer he made on US distribution.
They're hearing from him again in June 1966, when he says he wants to manage them.
And they hear about him in a BIG way in November 1966, when it makes the British newspapers that he's acquired two Beatles as clients.

And Brian Epstein, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr were all available to the press to tell them that Klein was talking bullshit. They outright said he had none of them as clients.

Paul McCartney? He's left London for Africa when the rest of them are all now back in England. No one seems to know he's done this either, and he seems to not be able to get the dates right to make the trip possible. (Go to Mal Evans account, and whether Jane Asher was there or not).

McCartney's also the only one who doesn't like Epstein's management.

But nevermind that!!! How is a Beatle escaping the country without detection, and completely going under the radar in concern with the press, media, EVERYBODY.

This is why the FBI and CIA don't have files on him ;)

I was then, and still am, a devout Christian. I was also a huge Beatles' fan. However, I could never see what all the fuss was about; what John said was simply the truth. Presumably, the press did what they always do ...

I have not watched this clip yet....but I believe the Beatles really stopped live shows because their music become more studio based (mixing sounds, tape loops, etc) and did not lend itself to a concert venue. And it seems like Christians are a little touchy about what Lennon said. He was in the middle of so much press and media attention and what was the media talking about? Music and the Beatles.
