you need to determine if the variables have the same rate of change. So lets say you have a table like this. x-column [-2, -1, 0, 1, 2] y-column [-5, -2, 1, 4, 7] Find the change in y over the change in x should be the same for any two points. For example change in y = 1-4 over change in x = 0-1. Your ration is -3/-1 which is 3. That is your slope. No matter what two coordinates you choose you will always have a ratio of three, If you don't the table does not represent a linear equation
