Can the M1 iPad Pro Replace a MacBook/Laptop?

Since the 12.9" iPad Pro has been out now for a couple months, can it really replace a MacBook or laptop as your only device?

Has anyone replaced their laptop with the new iPad Pro? I think for basic functions, you can get by, but to be truly productive I you still need a dedicated laptop. I will give Apple props for having the M1 chip across the range of their products so now you can choose the one that best suits your workflow!

Been watching a lot of “iPad to replace a laptop” videos and most of them usually address only the video editing side of things, which I understand since youtubers workflow revolves around video editing.

Most who watches these videos aren’t youtubers, just people with different needs of work, and I hope it should be addressed also since a lot of niche things Can be done on the iPad.

So glad others are expressing what I have been feeling about this debate. I don’t disagree that Apple is shameful in continuing to limit the iPad Pro’s potential because of the OS, but almost all of the arguments I have heard on YouTube about this not replacing a laptop has been exclusively about video editing and content creation. I am an administrator in higher education and my iPad Pro has been a wonderful replacement to my MacBook. It’s quicker to set up/access and has all of the essential software/apps that I need for work productivity, mainly Microsoft Office. I’m also an artist and my ability to create on the iPad is so much better than what I would have to do on my laptop.

I got the 2020 iPad that was $329. Completely capable and instantly replaced my 8 year old macbook pro for college. It has indeed replaced my laptop, BUT I only need very simple tools like excel and word that have dedicated iPad apps. Just my two cents

Hey, maybe do a video with people who can’t replace their laptops and people who can and have, because it strongly depends on the use case and which apps/programs you need

I would say it depends what you use a laptop for. For example I have only used my HP laptop for Microsoft word/excel, online banking and minor photo editing. So with the IPad Pro I have been able to completely switch over. Have not booted up my laptop in months.

Yeah. I’m so torn. I’m historically loyal to the Windows ecosystem but ARM is the future and Microsoft is more devoted to Software-As-A-Service pivots on inferior hardware than re-building In RISC for small form factors with the best hardware performance / TDP.

I got the new 12” M1 2TB iPad Pro for Christmas, and it totally has replaced by MacBook. I love it, it’s more convenient. The pencil is great, and the touch screen is great as well.

Great vid but…I disagree. I have replaced my laptop with an Apple Certified Refurbished iPad Pro 2018 11”. However, I am a light/average user and do no heavy lifting as such (photo/video editing). And, I must say that it’s the best ‘tech’ decision I have ever made. I love my iPad and it is used each and every day for content consumption, emails and any admin stuff I need to do. So, yes it can replace a laptop if you’re a ‘tech lightweight’ like me 😊👍

It’s well suited for architecture use, ideation and creation is more close at home like pen in paper, unlike when I do the task on my Mac.

I'll just say if you're looking for a good mobile device iPad is a good one. But no, It won't replace a laptop

most people don’t need final-cut pro, so basically an iPad can totally replace your laptop. Even with the current version of iPad os. apple wants us to use lumafusion on iPad, if you need final cut go macbook.
