Dynamic Figures: Why Your Figures Are Stiff

This video is all about figure dynamics, balance and working with gravity. We'll explore how to ground our figure over a center of gravity, then learn how to flow power through a figure from the ground, and then use some examples to show how we can take stiff figures and give them energy and power.

Comic artists are such great teachers, I always appreciate it when they talk about fundementals without going into all the gnitty gritty theory.

Why were my figures stiff? Well because before I didn't have David Finch! Huge help Dave. Awesome vid!

My learning and ability occurs in "leaps" instead of gradual progress, and I think I might have just stumbled upon another leap. Really great video, somehow all my time studying this and you have best explained gravity, balance, and force. Sounds like I'm going to buy the book!

I've been trying to learn to draw for years, and this is the first time I've actually understood what the "Primary action line" was *actually* meant to be

is noone gonna mention how he casually draws perfect vertical straights for the center of mass?

I can't even begin to think about drawing after watching this. Right now, I need to learn how to sketch like this before I can ever move forward. Great video.

Thank you so much for this video! I followed along and did all the scetching. I feel like my understanding for dynamic poses, and my ability to draw them fast, just increased by 1000%.

Oh man.. you can’t even begin to fathom how helpful this was for me man! Very appreciated for making this video honestly. I’ve watched this literally 10 times now. I would actually and truthfully consider myself quite the good artist, & always have been since I was a little kid (just turned 27), but mostly with copy art/drawings (drawing what I see, & or of an already existing picture, etc..). A few years ago I decided I wholeheartedly wanted to become a legit mangaka & draw nothing but manga alone, & eventually make my own manga with the story and structure, etc I’ve put so many years into writing out & planning, etc. the hardest part was definitely learning to draw anything & everything (literally..) from off head without reference most of the time, just all me & my mind. After like 5 years now I’ve gotten really REALLY far honestly, & take pride in that fact. Though, I do still have trouble with certain things a decent amount of times (which I feel is to be expected really.. I mean I’m not Tite Kubo, Hiro Mashima, or Eiichiro Oda! Lol). One thing I’ve been adamantly working on perfecting better is this here. Basically better & less stiff poses, angles, & fluidity to them when drawing new characters & fight scenes etc. I wanted better postures, poses, gestures, etc.. much more dynamic & to pop more. I’ve been doing good, but sometimes I’ll get really tripped up on certain angles, or trying to comprehend why something goes the way it does, the physics to it, & just getting the full on mechanics to it all, & not just one specific area etc. & even though I already know most of this stuff (what this video is covering) & put it into practice right now.. I still feel I could do it better so my work looks more like a truly professional mangaka’s would. So this video was a great help to see you really explain everything & why it is you do it the way you do, & just seeing it done from someone who’s far better than I am in all honesty, & get a better outside perspective on things! So thank you man. I’ve been watching a lot of your videos now for areas I feel I could do better on. Any video I watch, I literally watch them at least 10 times too lol. Cause I want to be able to drill it all into my head completely & really get it down. That’s one thing I’m good at is being able to watch and then retain it for later & have it down, & then practice with using what I’ve retained to my memory. Your vids are great for this for me! I’ll be excitedly looking out for more in the future that I feel I could definitely benefit from. Thanks again! Keep at it homie👌🏻✌🏻
