A few thoughts on my 27th birthday about time and spatial synesthesia.

i have the same type of synesthesia but i’ve never talked to anyone about it. i’m afraid that no one will believe me or that they’ll think that i’m crazy. i mean it does sound a bit crazy when you say that you can see time, but it’s hard to understand unless you can actually see it. the way i see it is like a long road separated by month. the summer takes up the most space for me too. each month has a color and a feeling. i can also see my entire life; the fourteen years that i’ve lived are all in maroon and the rest is black, but i know that when i get older it will fade from maroon, to red, then orange, and finally back to maroon. i can see a day mapped out in my head, and it kind of looks like a long tile separated into smaller tiles for every hour. same thing goes for a week, where i can see each day as a different color. i never realized that this wasn’t normal until recently, and i’m now just realizing how important of a role it plays in my life. thank you for reading this if you’ve gotten this far, i kind of just needed to let it all out i guess:)

When I was in high school, a friend once said “I’m 17 in high school, so I’m gonna be that until I’m not that” it’s always reminded me to stay present.

Interesting, that calendar is exactly how I've always imagined a year of time. The linear time thing is similar too but in my head it's like a piece of ribbon that bends or twists at every 100 year mark.

I have the timeline thing but my calendar is a bit different. It's great to see I'm not the only one who has this.

I have the same form. Didn't really realize it or put words to it until 2008 when I did research. It's neither a disability or an advantage. it's just an "is". it's how I see numbers, calendars, years, days of the week, etc

I just discovered this form of synesthesia and never knew this wasn't a normal way of thinking for most people until now but hearing you say this out loud and draw it out is literally making me cry because this feels like everything I've ever perceived about time finally put into words

The distant past is up there and bends towards the left. 1900s come down a ‘ladder’. 1980s go horizontal to the right. With 1985 in the middle. The year I was born. 1990s continue down to 2000. From 2001 its horizontal again and continues to the right. Forever. I can place myself anywhere within these years. Sometimes i look to the left, sometimes to the right. January is top left. Spring bends down. Summer stretches. Autumn is lower. Winter loops back. Time takes a shape, but is non linear. I can visualize myself looking from any of the points in time. But there are distant areas i can only look from afar. (Non English speaker). Edit: I really like the video.

Perfect.

It's amazing how your parents had the emotional intelligence to introduce you to a philosophical question at such a young and yet impressionable age.
Congratulations on making it to 27. Onward and upward 🤗

Thank you for making this. I just passed my 31st birthday and finally hearing someone else discuss how they see time makes me feel so understood.

You are 27 years old and welcome in any segment of my tiny universe. Your storytelling exposes you, all of you, every fall, knock, scrape and joy you have had in your life. I truly hope you never regret any of these vignettes Ann because I think they are built to be timeless, perhaps not intentionally. Casey was right. I'll try not to reply/respond in a sloppy way, but I bet you'll make me cry again.

Reverse math has plagued women in the last few generations. Being 40 I can say I know a little about this. What I appreciated about your video was that you’d set goals for yourself without making them be your bottom line for success. Plans change, life throws you surprises and knowing that “you are here” gives you permission to pivot and change direction. Do it unapologetically and without fear. Don’t look back unless it’s to smile on the beautiful memories you’ve created.

Thank you for being vulnerable, and opening the door to us to know you better. Life is beautiful...it is hard, and we make it happen. Thanks for expressing your perspective, it adds value to my understanding. Alan

The part about freezing time and catching that feeling in a bottle

I see years similarly, and our life timeline is EXACTLY the same. Except mine gets foggy past 60. I have the same line graph in my head. I project dreams and goals here too. This video is beautiful, and I’ve never seen someone take something from my brain and put it on paper in such a way. Thank you for sharing.
