For those wondering, when you get your Chef Level ServSafe Certification, one of the first things they cover in the course is that artificial food coloring is subject to a literal ton of regulation and rules, to the point its actively discouraged.

The context here related to the video, and Gordons issue, is that food coloring is often used to increase appeal and/or disguise food or "fool" the customer. Using food color in a way that makes it difficult to accurately or correctly identify food in any way is against regulation.

Obviously Gordon has seen this and can spot it from a mile away, and we all know how the man feels about shady, lazy shortcuts.

He said no because in South Asian food culture, you just add turmeric to everything, it has great anti inflammatory properties and it's so often used, you don't think of it as a food colouring.
