The creators actually said the reason that there are boys and girls as emotions in Riley’s head is because they wanted a group of emotions that could be more relatable to EVERYONE. Boys and Girls.

I’m bisexual and I’m all for characters identifying as such, but I literally think she’s just concerned about fitting in. remember on her first day at her new school in movie 1 she looks over at the ‘cool girls’ and Jealousy says “yea we wanna be friends with them”. she just seems like a regular, anxious middle school kid who wants to be friends with a cool/popular girl
