What Is The Vagus Nerve? | Vagus Nerve Explained | Brain, Mind Body Connect

📒 At the center of our bodies resides a long, sinewy nerve that extends all the way from our medullas down through our chests to beyond our stomachs. This nerve, known as the Vagus Nerve, happens to be at a most fascinating intersection, not only between our two physical nervous systems (our central and autonomic nervous systems) but also between our conscious minds and subconscious minds.

As such, it also acts as a bridge between our gross bodies and our subtle bodies. And it’s a nerve probably 99% of the population have never heard of nor even have a clue where it’s located. And yet the Vagus Nerve may be the single most relevant organ in our body relative to our peace of mind and happiness.

I have Multiple Sclerosis and my nervous system is extremely sensitive and highly responsive. This past few months I have been telling my neurologist about "my spine being hyper" to the point I feel it's constantly shaking, with a feeling of my organs (mostly my heart, lungs and stomach) being hyper as well. It's hard to describe but it's like I can feel them. I feel every heartbeat, breath and movement from my stomach when I'm digesting and it's heavy and extremely PAINFUL. No one told me about the vagus nerve, and I found this video a few days ago. So I started some basic exercises to calm it down and my MS flare up (including the pain) has toned down by 50% in 72h. WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THIS NERVE. It could have saved me 3 months of extreme fatigue and horrible pain! Thank you for your video, it's life changing!

The anatomy of the vagus nerve is actually a pair of nerves coming from the base of the skull on either side of the spine and then it has many branches going to the organs. It is not one nerve running down the length of the spine. The procedure of using electrical stimulation of the vagus has shown benefit for depression, but this signal is sent to the brain, not the heart as shown in the video. Sudarshan Kriya does much more than just cause vagus nerve stimulation (VNS). If VNS was responsible for all the benefits we see with Sudarshan kriya then all those benefits would be seen from other forms of VNS. When explaining science or medicine, accuracy is important for credibility. There is no doubt of the benefits of Sudarshan Kriya for those who have done it, and the vagus nerve plays a role in how the body responds to Sudarshan Kriya, but for those who haven't experienced the practice, they can be suspicious of the claims when basic science is misrepresented.

This is so interesting and there is truth in it. I had felt unwell for a long time with heart skipping beats, GI problems, cortisol issues, strange neurological events which affected lower back, legs (briefly) etc etc....Then 3 weeks ago I also developed acid reflux suddenly that wouldn't go away. My sleep was affected and I was waking up too early. Never getting a full night's sleep.
All these events created a visceral kind of anxiety too. Horrible things all of them.

A few days ago (yes, only DAYS) I started doing diaphragmatic breathing exercises, because I had noticed that taking a diaphragmatic breath could help stop the reflux if I could feel one beginning.
At first I thought iit was just a little "hack" I had accidentally found naturally.
Then I began to notice I felt much better generally when I took a few of these kinds of breaths. Just lighter somehow.

So only TWO days ago I started doing regular diaphragmatic breathing (3 times a day) and being aware of my breathing at other times, and also when eating.

This may be a fluke, but I slept a full night last night. I had energy for a 4 mile walk. I only got the slightest trace of acid reflux today and that lasted only 10 minutes. My mind and emotions felt more positive. I enjoyed my food. My gut was calmer generally.

So I can say there is truth in maybe doing pranayama, or other breathing techniques. if simple diaphragmatic breathing has helped me in only two days!! I will keep up doing the exercises.

Last week a friend showed me an exercise to reset the Vagus nerve. Of course after many years suffering recovery will take time. This presentation is the best I’ve found on the topic. It covers every important component of the nerve and it covers all the wonderful ways we can bring it and ourselves back to life.
May God bless you.

Stress is not a disease. It is our body's reaction to our inner and outer world.

I am practically experiencing benefits of Sudarshan Kriya since last 6 years. It helps to keep my mind calm & relaxed. Feels energetic naturally after doing it. It has helped me to cope up with depression. Gratitude towards Gurudev Sri Sri Ravishankar ji for teaching us this beautiful breathing technique.🙂

I have been practicing Sudarshan Kriya Yoga or SKY for the last 10 years and was able to relate to the numerous benefits mentioned in this video.
Finally, those who have been sitting on the edge and wondering whether to learn Sudarshan Kriya or not can take the last step to learn it.

This video was an introduction at best and deserves a much more extensive video that explains things like the Val salva maneuver. This occurs when the Vagus nerve is stimulated by downward pressure as though someone is having a bowel movement. This can slow the heart rate and is an important technique to use with someone who has ventricular tachicardia. Well known by paramedics.

Excellent presentation. Thank you. The nervous system's powers seem to be between the physical & the spiritual. Writings of the Baha'i Faith state: "Its phenomena shall be perfect when its spiritual and physical relations are normal. When the material world and the divine world are well co-related, when the hearts become heavenly and the aspirations grow pure and divine, perfect connection shall take place. Then shall this power produce a perfect manifestation. Physical and spiritual diseases will then receive absolute healing."

I have suffered with Vagas nerve for approx 40 yrs. It happens when I have a bowel movement. Approx 10 times, so frightening. I immediately feel like ice water is going through my body..top of head to feet, blood pressure drops, can't talk or hardly move, everything goes limp. Last attack I passed out..my heart doctor recommended next time to lay down on floor. I came very close to hitting my head..so grateful to hear about others who suffer.

One doesn't have to do yoga to derive benefits from stimulating this nerve(although it's a healthy way.) Humming, whistling, singing and laughing are all ways to trigger it as well. It is written

Personally I have experienced the power of Sudarshan Kriya, it has been life transforming.
One suggestion: please correct "Relived depression" in video to "Relieved depression". Else the meaning changes to mean a totally opposite thing.

Active Vagus nerve helps you to keep your body and mind in perfect balance. Regular practice of yoga involving spinal twist and abdominal crunch embedded with chanting of Om and deep meditaion would make the vagus nerve to be in a 'Wow" condition.
