You are the first person on YouTube who actually demonstrated how to use one of these properly.

I have a white one just like that. It is great to use at a cabin or camping where you don't have access to running hot water. I suspect that this is what they used to use in rural areas in the 1800's and early 20th century.

These scuttles are great.I am using my Grandads Staffordshire made in England scuttle. Its probably 70 or more years old and still looks great.Dad said he would cut an ordinary soap bar in half and put that into the scuttle. He was a boy during the depression and learnt how to stretch his pennies & so ordinary soap would do the job as far as he was concerned. Its nice to have something your Grandad and then Dad used.Good to let the brush steep in the hot (not boiling) water in the scuttle while you wet your face with hot water, this gives the bristles time heat up and absorb the hot water.Scuttles are normally made of ceramic because it holds the heat better then metal.

I'm almost 50, been shaving since high school like most gents. Spent several years in the military where I had to shave daily. So you'd think that I'd know everything about shaving at this point.
However I always manage to learn something new on this channel. Whether it is about a shaving technique, a piece of shaving gear, or a shaving product.
Thank you for your content. Please keep it coming.

Youre correct about these being for water conservation. Imagine the time before indoor plumbing. You would have a pitcher,  basin and mirror in your room. You don't want to spoil a whole basin of clean water with soap and shaved off hair. So you can get the scuttle soapy with dipping your brush and wipe your straight razor with a towel, not in the basin. The scuttle allows the whole shave without tainting the basin water.

I really like your channel. I'm 78, and still using a DE. Nothing like it. It's fun to see others using one too. Thanks.

I've never seen one of those. Thanks for putting us up on this. I'm deployed currently and one of the contractors I work with has shaving bumps real bad. He started with a safety razor and suddenly they went away. Might have new potential customer. I'll send him your way.

I’ve never put the whole puck in. I just build lather in the bowl part of the scuttle, that way it keeps your lather warm from the hot water. Looks like a nice scuttle though!

Finally, a voice of reason regarding the way this scuttle is supposed to be used.
I've seen people use the top part as a lathering bowl, even for creams. Made me sad every time. Neither does it makes your lather warm, neither is there any logic to mix your lather and simultaneously push it through those holes on the bottom.
Good video sir.

As a new subscriber and convert to the style of shaving I cut my teeth on 55 years ago (yes, I got caught up in the change to cartridge razors like everyone else) I have been enjoying shaving again. Thank you for leading me back to a great shave! Have a great day!

I didn't know that these scuttles were still being produced. Just figured they were antiques and such. Another thing to add to my collection.

You see loads of these in Antique and car boot sales in England, they go really cheap. I've used one for years and you really show how to use one brilliantly. If you wet shave this gives perfect lather if done the way you show. Nice one.

I used this method with my straight razor for civil war reenacting. This process by campfire is very slow but invigorating. Thanks for showing old school shaving.

I have seen a few videos demonstrating how to use a scuttle it’s hard to understand the crazy ideas some people have. I hope some of those poor misguided people will somehow find your video. Your demonstration is perfect.
