I’m terrible with traditional grip. I watched a YouTube video w/ Vinny Colaiuta playing sometime in the 90’s. Vinny is crashing on this huge China cymbal to left of his hihat w/ his traditional grip hand My hands hurt just watching Vinny do that. Crashing on cymbals and hitting my rack tom/floor tom feel extremely awkward for me and my hands hurt terribly after. Mad respect ✊ to you drummers who use it and sound amazing . Watching how fluid and fast Buddy Rich could go around the kit with traditional grip still leaves me in total awe. I definitely think traditional grip has its place when playing very light patterns on the snare and I also bust out the traditional grip when I play Levon Helm songs from The Band, especially cripple creek. Traditional grip is the only was I can nail those little drags he does so well. That swampy funky half time feel sounds great when you play it correctly

Small tip: to find the balance point for the stick, split the stick into thirds, and the perfect balance point should be a third out from the butt of the stick

Not sure why traditional is even used, it was only started because of how marching drummers held their drums high with a shoulder strap
