Seek Ye First The Kingdom Of God

What Are Some Ways to Seek the Kingdom of God While on Earth?

In Matthew 6:33, Jesus urges his disciples—and all believers—to “seek first the kingdom of God,” yet many Christians are baffled by this command. In the context of everyday life, what does it mean to "seek first the Kingdom" truly mean?

Jesus gives us the advice to "seek first the Kingdom of God" in the midst of a lesson about worry, namely care over things like food, housing, clothing, and the like. This is one of the most impactful passages in the Sermon on the Mount because Jesus uses His work on the cross to demonstrate the distinction between living under the old covenant and the new covenant.

Prior to Christ's crucifixion, the majority of people struggled, toiled, worked, and mostly just tried to exist through their own creativity and willpower. Humanity had been cursed by sin with terrible labor and working through the sweat of their brows, as well as being cut off from the great supply of God. They also had to adhere to the law of Moses, which was difficult for everyone to accomplish correctly. Prior to Jesus' arrival and the establishment of the Kingdom of God, this was the reality that mankind had to live with.

By shedding His blood on the cross, Jesus brought about a reconciliation between humanity and the Father and returned us to the fullness of what it is to be a son or daughter of the King. Imagine a scenario in which, like in the prodigal son tale, the father ran to the son in love and reinstated him as a son and heir. The son has no needs because all of his needs are provided in plenty, and all of his rights and privileges have been restored. Wow, what wonderful news!

Lyrics:

Seek ye first the Kingdom of God
And His righteousness
And all these things shall be added unto you
Hallelu, Hallelujah!

Man shall not live by bread alone
But by every word
That proceeds from the mouth of God
Hallelu, Hallelujah!

Ask and it shall be given unto you
Seek and ye shall find
Knock and the door shall be opened unto you
Hallelu, Hallelujah!

If the Son shall set you free
You shall be free indeed
You shall know the truth, and it shall set you free
Hallelu, Hallelujah!

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
He shall direct your paths
In all your ways acknowledge Him
Hallelu, Hallelujah!

Seek ye first the Kingdom of God
And His righteousness
And all these things shall be added unto you
Hallelu, Hallelujah!
