Sometimes… Only ever sometimes… I like to think that after Bilbo had seen the One Ring resting against Frodo’s bare chest, after having given the lad both Sting and the Mithril shirt, and had involuntarily reached for it with the intent to take from the younger Hobbit by force… Perhaps the action itself had somehow also forced countless memories from the past to flash before his eyes, as he realized what he had done.

And when he forced himself to turn away from Frodo with tears building in his eyes and an utterly heartbroken expression falling into place over his face, I like to think that maybe… Just maybe… When he spoke… When he said: “I’m sorry I brought this upon you, my boy.” Maybe he was thinking back to the moments in which he had decided to refrain from telling Gandalf the truth of having found the Ring in the caves. The realization hitting him that nothing good ever actually came out of him harboring through the years that past, other than it now resulting in Frodo having to bear it.

And when he said: “I’m sorry that you must carry this burden, ” He was referring to the terrible weight of literally the world on Frodo’s shoulders that no doubt weighed heavily on his own shoulders throughout the years. And the realization hitting him that it would no doubt be far worse for the Lad, due to him needing to somehow find his way to It’s birthplace in order to destroy it. (which I’m almost certain Lord Elrond would have filled him in on, after the Fellowship had departed. Considering Bilbo was there in Rivendell at the time. Just hadn’t taken part of the meeting.)

But above all….
Above everything else…
I like to think that it wasn’t Frodo he was referring or crying out to when Bilbo said: “I’m sorry for everything.” In that agonizingly heartbroken tone and eyes that seemed to be seeing something Frodo wasn’t after he said it… Maybe Bilbo, in that moment, was remembering thirteen faces. Three very specific ones in particular. Maybe he was remembering the mischievous gleam in both Fili and Kili’s eyes and Thorin’s rare gleam of an infectious smile. Remembering the way they could hold themselves elegant and strong and regal not just on a normal day, but even in battle. Remembering the bond he’d developed with them after hard-earning their respect. The friendship that somehow appeared out of nowhere between himself and them, along with the others. But most of all, perhaps he suddenly remembered the day in which he was forced to watch the three of them descend into their final resting place, within the Royal tombs of the Lonely Mountain. Finally, voicing just how incredibly sorry he was for how everything turned out at the end of that particular adventure, with Frodo the only one paying witness to him finally breaking down and admitting it out loud.

Knowing that, although he truly wanted to, he would never be able to see Erebor one last time before his days were up and his strength failed him. As he thought he would after reaching Rivendell, before he left the Shire on his birthday.

Maybe, just maybe, these were his thoughts. The heartbroken thoughts of the Company of Thorin Oakenshield’s finest Master Burglar….

Bilbo Baggins: The Unexpected Hero.

The adventures Hobbit who would go on to be a one of the Greatest Heroes to the Dwarven Kingdom of Erebor, the Elves of Mirkwood, and the Men of Dale.

This was beautiful. I'm on a LOTR kick right now. And this made my day.

Sometimes I fear war, especially when I feel I am a coward and I will lose. I feel like everytime I lost a physical fight just adds another weight on my back. I just wonder if Tolkien can write journeys of people becoming brave I just wonder when I will gain courage. I dunno.

After watching Witcher season 2, I need to rewatch The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings to erase the travesty I've seen.

I don't know who needs to hear this right now but this is for you

“There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. But sad or merry, I must leave it now. Farewell!”- Thorin oaken shield king under the mountain
