In this episode of #TheTribuneInterview, the ouster of Sheikh Hasina as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh has serious implications for India, with the possibility of terror groups and anti-India elements gaining a foothold in the country, and immigration into north-Indian states increasing, thereby posing a demographic challenge. Also at stake is economic cooperation. Lt Gen KJ Singh, who has commanded a corps based in West Bengal, and Brig SS Ahluwalia, a decorated veteran of the 1971 Indo-Pak war who later commanded a brigade in the east, discuss the ongoing situation and the way ahead with The Tribune’s Editor-in-Chief, Jyoti Malhotra and Special Correspondent Vijay Mohan

The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising five eminent persons as trustees.

The biggest problem of Indian foreign policy is that they are seeing Bangladesh through Sheikh Hasina and his party men narratives only. Whereas Indian civil society members and Media, Neither they have knowledge about what Bangladeshi people want nor they have any in depth socio-economic condition of Bangladesh.

Now suddenly Indians worried about Bangladesh democracy, But you guys were sleeping when Hasina rigged 3 consecutive elections in Bangladesh, when she started tortured to oppositions, when she and her party men laundered over $94 billion out of Bangladesh, when Media were strictly controlled, and at last Hasina’s hand filled with students blood. She was almost making Bangladesh an another North Korea and So Hasina’s departure was bound to happen.

Finally India should make friendship with Bangladeshi people and all political parties, not only with any specific party or person. And should have business deal in win-win situation, and should have respect for Bangladeshi mass people. Through this Bangladesh-India friendship will sustain very long.

India mind your own business. You do not own Bangladesh. It will be Indian Vietnam or Iraq if you try again to interfere with your feelings of entitlement.

The coup was facilitated by the army even though it is trying hard to look "neutral" after the house has burned down. There are two main factions in the BD military--one with jihadi mentality and the other with secularist, moderate leanings. Almost all of BD weaponry is Chinese. Indian military is aware of this but still has had cordial relations with the BD counterparts. We don't need to build any new bridges with the BD army. Gen KJ Singh stating that India treats BD as a "gulam" is not just absurd and totally incorrect but unhelpful and disturbing coming from such a senior officer. As a native of Assam with deep family defence ties, I know what I'm saying. India has literally sacrificed its huge garments business to help BD rise and bent over backwards on many other issues. We are watching the unfolding scenario and will do what is best for India.
