I have a w123 240d 1984. When i bought the car was absolutely a wreck. Got bodywork garage to strip the car to bare metal, welded spray painted, new carpets and leather seats, rebuild the whole engine aswell as updated breaking system, fitted central locking on it and all new electric cables. Hose pipes exhaust system, and many more. All and all bought the car for £1500 1 year later when fully restored i realised i have spent close to £13.000. Is my car worth now 13k to others? Most likely nobody will pay that sort of money for it, to me however it is my pride and joy. And believe you me I wouldn’t swap it for a brand new car, most of people i know say why did i invest big money on a w123. The truth is? I gave this car another 30 yrs life at least n hope my future kids will do same thing n keep it in family for generations to come.. absolutely stunning car. And was worth every single penny I’ve spent in it 👍

Honestly this is probably the 100th video I've watched trying to convince myself why as a teenage adult i should buy this car, i love this w123 and the w114 and God Willing when i finally have the funds i will buy this car. I always pains me to see how where i come from most of these cars are nothing but just the body shell or its the complete car but it's rotting away under a tree.

I'm the biggest fan for these legendary W123s. Over more or less30 years, I have owned and enjoyed them. As of now I have three w123 versions. four door 300 td  2door coupe 300td and a station wagon 300 td.  Mine are all original. The looks, quality and safety all in one package. Thanks Mark for this video, its a pure entertainment for me to watch such videos. God bless.

Yes Mark you’re right. Loved your book and the magazine I get every now and then with all the articles and stories. Lots of great info on that series. My 240d is still running amazingly after 15 years owning it from the original owner. To bad there aren’t more interviews with people in the states who live their w123s. Cheers!

I own a 1982 300 CD Turbo Diesel (Coupe') with almost 300k in it and a red one at that. Love it. A very classic looking car. Timeless in design.

There is footage of Mercedes engineers during the development of the W123 platform, from around 1974-75. They take 2 of their W123 test vehicles to the Alps, and bring a trailer connected to a truck. They disconnect the trailer from the truck at the bottom of the Alps and connect it to one of the test vehicles. They put the other test vehicle on the trailer. And then, with the car they use to tow it, they completely disconnect the COOLING system!!!! You see them taking off the upper radiator hose and putting a cap on the radiator connector. Then they proceed to drive it UP the mountain, WITH the trailer, WITH another car on it, ON a hot, sunny day.

Now, you don't really know if they still left coolant inside the block or they drained out all the coolant, but either way, holy cow they engineered these things to last!!

i don't regret buying my '82 240D!! only time it wasn't reliable is when there wasn't fuel in the tank cause the fuel sender in tank didn't work! since then I cleaned out the WHOLE fuel system and got a new fuel sender in :)

I've had 5! My first, second and third car were w123's, currently I own a 1980 240TD estate and two w124's, one of which is a rust free estate!

Why not test the safety of the W123 against the Volvocious 240? I'd like to see that!

How do the Mercedes W123 models compare to the Volvo 240? I’d be interested in opinions from mechanics and owners. I drive a 1989 Volvo 240 sedan (in Australia). It’s a brilliant, long living car. It regularly does long distance trips and is now at 408, 000km. I love the Mercedes-Benz W123 series though too.
