12 step programs don't work for everyone, which is why it's important to know about the alternatives out there. In this video, I discuss three different alternatives to Alcoholics Anonymous and other programs.

Please make 2018 the year you change your life. If you are struggling with anxiety, depression, addiction or any other mental illness consider online counseling with a licensed professional at BetterHelp. It’s far cheaper and more convenient than in-person counseling. (This is a referral link for BetterHelp. I receive compensation when people use this link.)

This is an affordable online therapy website where you can choose what therapist you talk to depending on your problems. It's unlike any other therapy as YOU can decide what time you have your sessions, how you have them, where you have them and it's more affordable than your typical therapist!

Great video! I personally prefer Recovery Dharma it is for lack of a better word, a spin off of refuge recovery. There may or may not be meetings in your area, but there are many online meetings. It’s for recovery of substance and process addictions. The best part of it is that it teaches you how to live a happy life. Most of us are self-medicating at the point when we realize we have a problem. Definitely agree with CBT training in addition, and if you can afford it like he said an addiction therapist. Good luck everyone. We got this!!

Hey! So, I wanted to let you know that I am trained to lead SMART meetings and I am also a therapist. From the training and meetings I've attended the goal is abstinence and not harm reduction. We will not keep anyone from attending if they are not ready to abstain but we do not teach or advocate harm reduction. We tell those who are wanting to moderate that we are a program of abstinence.

The Big Book states in the Foreword To Second Edition, page xxi "Upon therapy for the alcoholic himself, we surely have no monopoly."

Thank you for this very informative. I just typed in alternatives to AAA this is what came up. This is my deal and I know that people are in denial and all that but my honest reality is I do not drink every night and I don’t drink drink in excess every i’m a drink 2 to 4 pints of moderately strong beer, IPA. I do meditate, about three decades. I know where the emotional links are. 90% I just need to talk to somebody and I go to the same place to drink. That’s why I spend 90% of my alcohol. My point being is like I wanna social program peer support with people who drink more than they should but are not getting drunk every night or every time they drink. Any ideas? Thanks all.🖖🏽🖖🏽🖖🏽

Thanks so much for this! I just got Noah’s book Refuge Recovery. I love that it’s also a work book. I began a Buddhist path to recovery a few weeks ago and after 17 years of suffering and struggle it has made a HUGE difference in my life.

I am a recovery coach for people suffering from substance abuse. I often try to find alternatives to 12 step programs for my peers. It's a small town in Ohio, but today there are online alternatives, as well.

I clicked on this video to learn about the other options outside of AA, because I'm just not feeling its vibe, but I stayed for this man's silky smooth midnight jazz radio show voice. Also, I do believe that if you genuinely are an addict, you definitely don't have the ability to cut back on whatever bad thing it is that you feel is a problem, and that's not just drugs and alcohol but food and video games, whatever. So I think smart recovery is a great tool, and it's definitely helped me, because yes at one point I did get mad when somebody would leave a sip of their alcohol and their glass and there were times where all I wanted to do was get drunk from sun up to sundown, but as time went on, and I was sitting in AA meetings thinking that's all there was, their philosophy made me feel absolutely terrible and it made me question what I was doing there. It made me question am I really an addict like these people, though that is a very individualistic word, or am I just somebody that needs to learn how to chill the you know what out. and it helped me realize that it was the latter. It with a combination of the therapy, his third option, has not only helped me get the proper mental health care that I've needed, but when I go out to dinner I might have one drink and I'm good to go. I know I don't have to get drunk anymore to have fun, I can just have one.

Hi I’m searching for the best 12 step alternative program for my boyfriend I was wondering if you still recommend Refuge Recovery as #1 alternative? I just heard of Recovery Dharma as well.. what do you think of it? Thank you for your time and thank you so much for sharing this video. It’s deeply appreciated!

I have been attending refuge recovery meetings for about 6 months, in addition to NA meetings. I haven't worked the RR program, but I have to say I really enjoy the meetings!

I was so interested in refuge recovery however there was only one meeting an hour away and when I got a few friends together to go, it was no longer to be found on Google :( bummer. I am looking forward to reading the books!

I’m so glad to see some “SMARTies” posting here! a few updates, if I may... SMART Australia HAS swung over to Harm Reduction (I don’t endorse that). SMART likes to say we are Abstinence ‘oriented’ now as opposed to abstinence based.
I facilitate both F2F and online

What utter crap. He begins by telling us he will talk about 3 of his favourite alternatives but then goes on to dismiss initiatives such as harm reduction as "false recovery" by saying that they teach people to use safely then qualifying his statement by saying that if he knew how to use safely he would not be here. I mean WHAT??? THAT'S LITERALLY THE POINT of harm reduction: to teach people to use safely, but he tries to turn it around.
What a charlatan.
