I'm showing you the basics to blending colored pencils with Odorless Mineral Spirits or Odorless Paint Thinner! I've got tips and techniques for colored pencil blending perfect for a beginner! This technique works on oil or wax based pencils. I'm using my Polychromos for this demonstration but I've had great results in blending Caran d'Ache Luminance, Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor and prismacolor in this way.

I use Zest-it blender, it is made with Orange Oil (so it smells like oranges) but the thing I like most is that it comes in a jar with a screw on lid & it has a sponge in the jar that is saturated with the blender, you just press the brush into the sponge to dampen it, there is no oversaturation of the brush & very little waste, when your sponge is losing its spirit you just put some more in the jar. I keep a little bit in a separate jar for cleaning the brush. I am sure you could put a piece of sponge in a jar with any of the other blenders .

Excellent. I thought I wasn’t supposed to do circly strokes and been trying not to do it, glad I am allowed. Wish I’d seen this before I bought my pencils I am not a multi layer person. My understanding has jumped so much, thanks Lisa.

my brush leave brush stroks > <! I find that using Q-tips helps a lot in larger areas, just had to make sure it's not too wet (I dry it off on a piece of paper towel) hope this will helps others, Thanks Lachri! love your videos!

This is by far the best video I've seen that involves mineral spirit. You help clear up so much that I wish I knew before applying it to a drawing.

lol I've been using odourless thinner for almost 3 years now with my colored pencils and in only minutes I learnt that I have been using it wrong 😂😂😂😂 I've only been laying down thin 1 or 2 layers of color. lol I guess you learn something new everyday ! thanks

I’m so so so happy I found your channel, I also love the link to all of
Your art supplies and how you note that some do not offer international shipping, I am living in a country that isn’t the U.S., and this little thought is so nice!

I appreciate the demo. I used the mineral spirits recently for the 1st time and was mostly successful with the blending, but now I can see that I was lifting off some of the pigment. I'll try less mineral spirits on the brush next time!

Hi Lisa, thank you for your videos. I have just got into colored pencils 4 months ago and I love it as a medium. I enjoy using oil based coloured pencils more and the only mineral spirit I can find near my place is the Winsor and Newton artist white spirit.

OMG! Thank u so much! I have had so much trouble getting this right. I changed brushes, changed brands of PT, paper, etc and still my work was grainy. I now know I didn't have enough layers. I would put down my layers think I was done then blend. I didn't go back over it so it was still grainy. It was one of those duh moments lol. But hey, art is all about making mistakes and improving right?

Thanks for the advice! I'm going to do my two cream colored golden retriever dogs as my next art piece, so the blending should help me.
