Thunder Bringer | EPIC: The Musical Animatic

Speed ran a 4 min animatic in 6 days! I'm not sure how I'm awake or alive at this point. Can't want to take a crack at the REST of the musical. OH and I actually captured footage while I worked so I can make a fun little "How its made" style video!

I love how Odysseus isn't concerned about his man attacking, in a twisted way he had Zeus backing him up, no need to worry

I honestly appreciate how, underneath all the strutting and vanity and manipulation, Zeus is basically telling Odysseus "I'm not going to make you a martyr, and I'm not going to judge you for not being one. These guys had their chances and blew them, but you've got other people depending on you."

Now THIS is a proper Zeus design. Handsome, sexy, powerful, and not quite young or old, exactly the type of form that a vainglorious King Of The Gods would choose to appear as. The "madness-yellow" motif is a great touch too.

everyone talking about eurylochus not attacking odysseys but I love that the rest of the crew has very little hesitation getting their weapons. because, they know if they were in his position they would make the same choose.

The way that Zeus is the only God that makes an appearance BUT doesn’t have anyone say his name is so powerful 😭 like, his thunder IS his intro, he makes his own! ⚡️

Honestly, this is probably the most myth accurate *visual* depiction of Zeus I've ever personally seen. The smile he has throughout the entire scene, due to other aspects of his expression, constantly flips from weirdly endearing, to creepy, to just plain *psychotic*

Which, when coupled with how he's sadistically taunting Odysseus to make him sacrifice his crew and the glee he takes in swatting them like bugs, just really helps make Zeus *feel* like an absolute monster that views mortals as playthings at best and inconsequential at worst.

Which is all slightly counterbalanced at 2:15 where Zeus drops the posturing for a hot minute to let Odysseus know that its not personal and that, at the end of the day, he's there purely on business. Which fits Zeus's role as the god of justice & hospitality. (By Ancient Greek standards)

I think you perfectly depicted Zeus here. The fact that his literal first line is, "Pride is a damsel in distress" before turning a cloud into a woman before continuing on and showing some sexual gestures, it's a perfect way to show that their pride is going to get screwed by him. Zeus is reminding them that they are mere mortals and they arrogantly consider themselves gods by attacking Helios's cow.

Even when he questioned how he made Odysseus choose, he showed how he knew Odysseus well enough that the choice was already set in stone long before Odysseus even considered the options. But it really didn't matter to Zeus. Whatever choice Odysseus made, Zeus had the enjoyment and pleasure of striking down their pride and reminding them that they were nothing but lowly mortals to him.

And Eurylocus resigns himself to his fate because he understands that in the end, they brought this upon themselves by not listening to Odysseus when he warned them repeatedly.

I feel like some people have been shying away from the horrifying sexuality of the song but this animatic really mailed it. Zeus holding the figure by her neck at the beginning was Oughhh-

Making Zeus’ eyes yellow grants him a level of insidious energy which you don’t actually see often. He usually gets a softer blue or sky blue, but Yellow really gives him a sickening presense and connects him more to lightning and stormbringing than the sky. It’s a nice touch!

ohhhh i didnt even think about the idea that zeus is giving odysseus a vision of penelope to manipulate him. penelope appearing yellow was NOT an accident T.T

Love how Zeus’ movement are all purely him LITERALLY flexing and posing. This is literally just a favor for him.

I love that you fully drew the whole crew, giving them the same detail as Odysseus and Eurylochus. It really gives the impression that they're people too, they also have families to return to, even if we never see that.

I love how terrified Odysseus is when the storm clouds roll in- of course he immediately knows what's coming, I'm not surprised he has some Zeus-related trauma since the last time he saw him he made him kill a baby.

(2:02) I like how you have all the men run wild. This is what led to their downfall. Instead of acting like a disciplined army, they are driven by their own self interests.

i love how manipulative and cruel zeus is in this video. like, he IS just doing his job as a divine punisher, but he knows he needs to push Odysseus along, so he sculpts a cloud that looks like penelope to put his hands all over. to add insult to injury, he gives oddsyeus a vision of penelope to remind him who he's trying to go back to, who he considers more important than his entire crew. he effectively puts Odysseus ' hands on the trigger and then gets him to pull it. he doesn't even give the crew the mercy of running back to the ship before he starts chucking lightning at them.
