In Chile, we had up until now a free trade agreement with USA, so we charged 0% tariff to all USA products. We still got hit with 10% except for Copper (which USA does not produce and we are the biggest producer worldwide). According to the very Trump equation for calculating the trade imbalance, the USA-Chile trade deficit was -17%, that is, a 17% IN FAVOR of the US. But every country with a trade deficit lesser than 10% (or even negative as our case) got a floor tariff of 10%.
I guess our free trade agreement is history.

I think one of the biggest misconceptions is that Trump's tariffs only affect big businesses. It's not that simple—these tariffs can trickle down to everyday consumers, impacting the prices of goods we buy regularly. I made the mistake of assuming tariffs were just a "big business problem" until I noticed my grocery bill creeping up.

The craziest part about the math is that the two values aren't supposed to cancel out. The author of the paper they cited wrote an op-ed in the NYT explaining that they used the wrong number and needed to divide their results by 4.

It's honestly shocking the level of incompetence.
