Here I find myself, a European, listening to an American, putting European history to an American perspective. And loving it! Funny how that works out.

Defenestration has a strong tradition in Czech republic. As a Czech I don't know why but maybe it has something to do with our mentality and sayings because one of it says: "Threw him out of the door and he will return by the window".. so if you threw somebody from the window directly he will definitely not return :D By the way we had 3 defenestrations in Czechia (all in capital in Prague) 1419, 1483 and 1618 (2 of them caused large religious conflicts in Europe.. maybe that's why we are one of the most atheistic nations in the world now). According to some sources we can say there were 4 of them because in 1948 (when communists took power in our country) a democratic politian (minister of foreign affairs at that time and son of our first president by the way) was found dead right under the window of his office. Until today we really don't know what happened. Some people say it was a suicide but most of the people say that it was a murder and he was thrown out of the window by agents of communist secret police. It's like a murder of Kennedy for us ;)

I find it more fascinating when two historical events happen almost simultaneously.

I'm old when you say Czechoslovakia and I understand what you mean :)
It's now Czechia and I'll never get used to it - oh! you just corrected yourself 👍

It's not really a series about the war itself but about the human tragedy that was the 30 Years War. So it would be interesting to complete it with a video talking about the war itself, like Feature History's video on the 30 Years War (only a 10 minute video).

Very small detail: why was Charles V smiling in the picture at 9:46 while signing the peace of Augsburg? It rather was a personal loss of his, so grave that he resigned from being holy Roman emperor just a bit later. I can imagine he didn’t really like signing that treaty

17:18 Frederick V married Elizabeth Stuart, daughter of James I. Frederick's daughter is Sophia of Hanover and his grandson thus is George I of Great Britain.

Your OC is fantastic man. Keep doing your thing, and don't worry about comparing yourself to other creators.

0:30 In fact, the German word Verheerung and different forms of it like verheerend (devastation and devastating) originate in that era. And when you think "Why is there the German word for army, Heer, in it?", that is the origin. Armies marching through Germany for 3 decades, destroying many towns and cities, plundering and killing

Charles the V his first title was the Duke of Burgundy, which is also where he grew up. Most of Burgundy was part of the hre.

Charles V. or Carlos I. Was not an outsider. He was a member of the Habsburgs family and the Grand child of Maximilian I, who was Holy Roman Emperor. It just happened that Charles V. father, Phillipe the King of Spain, died before Maximilian and therefore he was kaing of spain before he became emperor

The trend of people being thrown out windows is because it absolves the person of the sin of killing, I was said after you were thrown your fate was decided by God. This was told to me buy a tour guide in Prague. Huge fan of the channel, keep up the good work!

I really liked you put Bohemia on the map to help us understand. Because the Holy Roman Empire is just too much to grasp in terms of Geography and didn't really learn about that while learning North American history. For the next episodes of this series, if you can do that a lot, that'd be appreciated, thank you! I've watched the whole series and this was a challenge: understanding who's who and from where did they come from

This war actually lived up to its name…. Looking at you 100 years war

Edit: in case anyone who for some reason doesn’t get it I mean the 30 years war was actually pretty much 30 years and the 100 years war was not it was technically 116 years long which is what I meant by live up to its name

8:52 "...and the Holy Roman Emperor was an elected title rather than an inherited one".

Yes, but that in itself doesn't diminish the importance of the office. If it did, the US president would be even more of a symbolic head being voted in by millions of people rather than 7 as in the case of the HRE.

Being a powerful ruler in the middle ages and early modern period came down to how much land, resources and allies they had.

I would like to see your reaction to a couple of TED-ED's History VS series. mostly for you to play the jury as historical figures are put to the stand as their notable deeds are examined to determine if they are worthy of praise or scorn. Some starter cases you may enjoy or familiar with is History VS Andrew Jackson, Napoleon, Richard Nixon and Lenin.

Great first video about this topic. And I love how you will stop a video to put things in perspective or to go check out some maps so everyone can get an understanding of where and when this is all happening. Can’t wait for the next video!
