That looks like a remnant of either his death or attack animations. Originally, you could fight and kill the serpents, but the developers decided to remove that option. The files are still in the code though, and there are a few glitches you can use to trigger them. That looks like a way to half-trigger a few of Kaathe's animations.

I've got weird glitch too, when i killed Kaathe with debug. He just start spamed his famous last words ("Fool! You could not be the Dark Lord"). For some reasons i can't quit my game or use bonfire, so i just Alt+F4. After i re-start game, for some reasons i start in the middle of the Kiln. I guess it happened cause map of the Kiln and map of the Abyss pretty close to each other.
