ADHD: Treatment drugs in worldwide shortage, as people with condition struggle

People who take medication to treat ADHD are being forced to take desperate measures to make their prescriptions last.

It's due to a lack of supplies in the UK, and Sky News has been told the shortages could last until April - worrying news for those already struggling to cope.

Access to treatment has improved during the last couple of years because today there are more remote doctor's appointments and prescription writing online etc. It doesn't mean it's now easier to get a diagnosis than before, it's just easier for more people to get access to a doctor to diagnose them, meaning that the number of people who have been diagnosed and want to buy ADHD meds has increased. But manufacturing ADHD meds will not change because of better remote technology. A physical laboratory or factory has to make the medication and it takes a long time and a lot of money to build new factories/labs and increase production. So, more people are buying ADHD meds and production can't keep up. That is one possible reason for the shortage.

Currently, four different companies are reporting shortages of the drug. Their reasons include a shortage of its active ingredient due in part to the unusual way in which Adderall is regulated

Car accidents will also increase if people can’t access these meds. The accident rate for people with ADHD are so much higher than others. There will also be an increase in other types of “accidental deaths” for this group.

That sad thing is, that with ADHD, sufferers believe that meds is a miracle cure, as a sufferer myself, I’ve learned that alternative treatments are just as beneficial if not more 🙏
