I don't often relate to Captain Holt, but whenever I meet a new pet or baby, I always use the phrase "little one." Like I'll go, "and who's this little one?" or "How old is this little one?" It keep things gender neutral since people can get weird if you call a baby or a dog by the wrong gender.
