"Race, " as it is understood today, is a "social construct. Consider how fiction writers used the word on the 1800s. It could mean "family" (blood-kin) or nation or even the human race (family).

A patriot is someone who loves his liberty (not his nation)

He jealously selfishly protects defend champions and seeks retribution for his own personal liberty

Against all enemies foreign and domestic by default guarantees the right to liberty for others

Liberty means self ownership

Nationalism is pride in one’s nation
