Paper towels are paper products and can go in the microwave. Also, what about microwave plate covers that are made out of plastic and designed for the microwave. It’s hard to take Consumer Reports seriously anymore.

Onions (all by themselves)! They'll spark and burn so be careful. Carrots and grapes are another pair that can cause trouble. I know there are more but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.
