Fallout Isn't Fiat

The economy in Fallout's post-apocalypse runs on bottle caps. They're limited in supply, hard to counterfeit, and they're backed by an extremely valuable resource: water. Because even after the end of the world as we know it, fiat currency doesn't make sense.

I always end up having massive amounts of in game currencies.

I believe that the NCR did actually start printing its own currency. I’m not entirely sure if the games specifically cover it, but I’m going to guess it doesn’t end well.

Honestly, if they could go fiat, they probably would, but I imagine the world is too much in turmoil to trust anybody trying to issue such a currency. Someone is bound to try anyways.

And THIS is why I wondered if the merchants shouldn't have been the BBEG of 3. Free clean water would instantly devalue the bottlecap.

I love the fact that it was originally a joke from the developers but they gave a really good explanation of how it happened

Fiat currency requires a stable society. When society becomes unstable, the currency needs to have a set undeniable value

Honestly it still doesn’t work. That model of currency always collapses that’s why you go fiat, because we have not explored it before. Not enough gold and gold its self is extremely useless. When you’re eating gold you tell me everything about it it’s 💩
