Is there an explanation of how you learned the launchkey to select and record arm tracks?

I've got a Launchkey Mini mk2. Do the rotary knobs control ableton mixer (volume, sendes, etc) out of the box? I don't see that happen. In the IN CONTROL mode it gets the blue hand grip and I see control over devices. However, nothing happens to the mixer unless I do the hard mapping. Isn't it supposed to support at least track volume control out of the box?...Thanks whoever gives an answer!
