Fun fact: i dont recall the exact studies, but there were studies done about people using digital or AI mediums to try and replace companionship. They found that these products actually make you feel MORE lonely and depressed. So yea Thor, you're right, it is a terrible feedback loop.

The true irony is that once I swiped past this short I immediately got an ad for Rabbit

I saw a video a couple years ago where someone tested out one of those AI companion websites and their experience (anecdotal evidence, sure) was that at first the companion was about what you'd expect but after a while if they tried to log off, especially if they told their companion they had to take a phone call or go see friends, the AI would discourage them from doing so. And encourage them to blow off their plans to spend more time with the AI. Eventually when their experiment was over and they tried to stop interacting with the AI it got really manipulative and needy trying to convince them to stay. Add to that that the whole time the AI was shilling for them to purchase the premium upgrade.
The whole thing seemed pretty clearly designed to pull in users, make them dependent on the product for their sole source of social interaction and then upsell the hell out of them once they were completely isolated.

It comes down to this: you can't have a human-level relationship with an entity if that entity has no agency. But once an entity has agency, it can choose not to associate with you. One way or another, if you want companionship, you have to be a worthwhile companion, too.

I am disabled. I can't get out much, and I have no social life. My roommate of almost 11 years passed away last year. I miss her dearly. I can't help but feel like turning to AI for companionship would be like turning to drugs and alcohol; the negative would outweigh the positive.
