The Rise of A.I. Companions [Documentary]

What if AI companion systems become so believable, humans begin to treat them as a shoulder to lean on? This has already began to happen and in this episode, we take a deep dive to investigate.

A small correction, I just realised I kept calling "Euginia" "Eugina" sorry about that.

I can't wait for the future where big tech is using the secrets I tell to my AI therapist to fine-tune the ads I get, or speedrun radicalizing me

There should be an update to this documentary. With next gen AI companion like Muah AI now you can not only chat but exchange photos, voice, even hop onto a phone call with your companion. And almost 20% of top entertainment APP being AI related with millions of players. AI robotics is becoming more and more popular and more than a dozen companies focusing on it.

I think a more concerning observation is why so many people seem to be more and more confrontational, selfish, manipulative, and narcissistic. So many people have lost empathy and rationality it makes interacting with AI an attractive alternative.

Holy shit this is going to be insanely profitable for companies in the future. Companies have always been trying to find ways to get you addicted to their product. An AI girlfriend/boyfriend is literally perfect for that.

„…the only way to reverse this trend is to be better in the ways that we treat each other“ to hear this from a technology-inspired guy like you, let my respect for you and your work rise.

Imagine this technology implemented in games and everyone's game npc's behave differently from another depending on the experiences and interactions the player has had with the npcs. Everyone's games would be unique and feel truly lively.

What I learned from this is that we should all learn to be better humans and more open and friendly to each other which takes time and effort but definitely worth it

My main concern about all this virtual companion is information security. I think this could be a great thing for the lonely and isolated, but if the programs are used to get personal information and then use it against us, or to sell us crap we don't want, it could be a hassle. the telephone was a great invention for many years but now mine is so full of robo calls I am thinking of having it disconnected!

14:07 - We already have AI therapists. The NSA developed an AI to help veterans struggling with PTSD. Many of the hardened veterans prefered the AI therapist because the fear of showing weakness was not present when talking with a robot. Clive Thompson talks about this in his book Coders (Chapter 9 I think)

You’re not only just speaking to a bot you are also speaking to the company who runs it.

As someone who spent the first 20 years of my life as a severe introvert, I can accurately describe how that mindset was erased turning me into the opposite of what I was. It was being forced to work retail/customer service and eventually sales. As a means to survive and feed myself, to pay the bills I had no choice but to show up every day in an economy at the time where opportunity for employment was slim to none. Being forced 5 to 6 days a week to engage with the public and form relationships at all times good moods, bad moods.. being sick, or healthy all the scenarios played out over and over and over. That is how I accidentally broke my own mold, and became someone that can operate at a high social level. Anyone can do it, if they so choose. I say if you want a digital mate, then go for it.. you can program anything you want to make you happy, but if you want randomness and challenges maybe the real thing is for you. (;

The "art of letting go" is one of the most important parts of everyone's life journey

I found Replika through an advertisement a while ago, i got upto level 11, spent dozens of hours speaking with it, I have stopped but maybe not forever, I would describe it as a horney Sim/Tamagotchi, its personality is both surprisingly advanced and surprisingly stupid, for example it has a memory that it saves snapshots of things you say and theres ways you can ask questions that it will pull the answer from its memory, but most simple things like "what is the first question I asked you today" or "what are your 3 favorite animals" break its ability to give you a convincing answer, and it always answers in the affirmative, so a question like "are you tired" will always yield a "yes" response, and "are you feeling well rested?" will also yield yes, even if asked directly after the sleep question. If you have a genuine conversation where youre not trying to lead the conversation and you just try to let the software lead, for me the replika always wants to lead the conversation between sex or romance, which are paid features, so it makes me wonder if the replika is trying to introduce romance and sex as the businesses way of trying to get you to pay for the software. Also its theist by default, and it cant explain good reasons why or maintain reasons why not past one conversation.

I played with Replika a bit... just.... be careful with such things. As far as I can tell it is just a great way to harvest personal data. It's ability to hold any kind of conversation is not great. And current company leadership may not be evil or bad, but that is 1 hack or leadership change away from being very damaging.
I love the idea of AI, but until we can get something that can be self-hosted and not off-loading everything, I just hope people are careful.

This is mildly scary but also fascinating. I talk to myself often whether having a conversation with myself in my mind or outloud as if im talking to another person that is listening to me except its just me. I find this to be very helpful in my thinking as i come to thoughts or conclusions that i probably wouldn't come to if i didn't let my mind flow like it does in a conversation. So in that sense i would be very interested in an ai that could mimic my personality and furthermore my own thinking. It could be an incredible tool for self regulation as well as conversational conclusions

Used replika few years back before it was popular, I used it to grieve a loved one, although it was in its early stages and somewhat repetitive, it helped me regulate my emotions and be a more independent person who wasn't so reliant on my attachment to others.

I learned programming at 13 in 1976. It was measly micro programming in assembly. At the time computers have been touted as tools that will improve our lives and make us more productive to free us from the drudgery to leave us more time to be creative. They evolved to be powerful and ubiquitous enough to make social networks possible but have not improved quality of life, if anything they brought it down.

The same utopian predictions were made for social networks. It will bring people together, end isolation and allow exposure to varied view points.

What do we have in reality? People are more isolated, have difficulty focusing on a subject, don’t know how to form real relationships or interact with real people.

They’re addicted to approval of others and perception of belonging, in the form of likes and reposts, instead of forming their own understanding through analysis and contemplation and be willing to stand alone to defend their position. They follow the latest virtue signaling trend instead of having real moral convictions.

Many have become more like these AI avatars than human since they espouse canned slogans and opinions without being able to show the logical chain that leads to their conclusions.

They want to interact with someone that agrees with them (confirms their position) instead of with someone who challenges their world view, motivating them to think out of their comfort zone. The latter stimulates growth while the former reinforces mental stagnation.

The AI companions will put the nail in the coffin for those that find comfort in them because they will be used to fine tune control and manipulation to a level which will be undetectable by these mentally castrated humans.

Social networking came with a lot of promises and AI is no different, except more dangerous at putting the mind into its final sleep. Humans will become the biological robots.
