It was around 4 pm on April 5, 2023, when Andrea Papi bid his girlfriend goodbye and went for his usual run. At 26 years old, Papi was a healthy man, and he was also quite athletic. Going on runs was his usual way of blowing off steam and staying in shape. To top it off, he had the best gym out there – no gym at all, that is, but the great beauty and vastness of the Italian Dolomites right at his doorsteps. Andrea Papi lived in Caldes, in northern Italy. Caldes is located in Val di Sole, a valley in Trentino, which is surrounded by mountain peaks, each of them covered in miles and miles of forest. Papi’s house was right in the woods - when he left the house, he was already in the mountains.

When I was growing up there weren't any bears. We played in the mountains. In the last 20 years they've brought them in. They had brought elks in here. The elks increased. I believe that's why the bears were brought in. The elks didn't have any predators.

Oh no this was so sad RIP and bless his fiancé & family 🙏 I had been watching documentaries on Italian bears repopulating the country! And then this recent deadly attack was just terrible.

He was living his best moments before this unfortunate ending. That same risk he understood is part of the magic out there, we all take it to some degree but the reality is taking an unarmed jog through Jurassic Park is a higher risk tolerance than most can comprehend. Bikers and joggers often imitate easier than average prey and create incredibly dangerous circumstances for themselves by triggering the animals fight, flight or chase response. Sounds like he fought like hell, poor guy.
