Yes, it was like this because this was the choice the writers made years before by then, and also the moment Amy appeared, she replaced Penny in Sheldon's life. But we all remember at the start of the show when Penny was the only girl among the guys, the writers were playing with the idea of something more between Sheldon and Penny in several episodes, including the pilot (the subtle flirting moment between Penny and Sheldon, when Penny commented on the guys' boards) and actually, Parsons and Cuoco both, were all for it in the old interviews. Too bad the writers didn't explore it because these two had the best chemistry, period. Way better than Amy and Sheldon ever had.

Well, that is not entirely the truth as Sheldon once asked Penny out and said to her that he thinks he was 'the guy' she was talking about when describing that one who got away - I know, I know it was a joke on the show, but still. 😂 Penny and Sheldon had a great connection but also, Penny was actually Sheldon's type physically, if we consider all he said and who he liked in the past. Sheldon's crush in Young Sheldon was Paige - a beautiful blonde girl, a similar type of beauty to Penny. And Sheldon said once on The Big Bang Theory that Penny is attractive - it was in the early seasons if I remember correctly. This was the first and only time that Sheldon said it about ANY female on the show, in that straightforward manner. He didn't even say it about Amy once, and considering his past with Paige, Amy, when it comes to looks, was less Sheldon's type than Penny. Strange.

I'll be honest. I admit I see Penny as Sheldon's sister-in-law even though she treats Sheldon like a son or a brother. That's because I see Sheldon and Leonard as brothers because they knew each other longer than Penny
