Engine Bearing Myths! #mechanic #engineering #bearings

Engine Bearing are held in place by bearing crush, not the alignment tabs.

It's a common misconception. Many newer main and rod bearings don't even have alignment tabs on the bearings. The 6.7L Power Stroke is a prime example.

If you oil them, you're wrong. If you don't oil them, you're wrong. I personally prefer assembly lube so I'm probably wrong

I was bacon-baited, but I stayed for bearing info.

Clean and dry behind shells(so I'm told) oil film abd contaminats will affect crush and clearances to journals and possibly result in premature failure. The crush might force the oil out, but why take a chance

You dont prelube the back of the bearing only the side that touches the crank journal

I use white lithium grease break in lube..
On only the matting surface between the bearing face and the crank...also the cam..the lifters fully soaked in oil, then pre pumped, put thin layer of lithium grease in lifter holes.. oil pump pre loaded with oil...all rockers are pre lubed lithium grease...valve tops pre lubed

We always put STP on the bearing surface.

I use bacon grease on both sides of the bearing.

That's why they are seeing alot of 6.7l spun main bearings? That's one of the more common major problems with the newer 6.7l powerstrokes

No oil on the backs, the added oil adds .0- whatever tf thou difference and eventually they will be more likely to spin than ones that weren't oiled because that extra thou difference.

Which is why you want the mating surfaces very clean on assembly. Theres no reason whatsoever to lube the back side of the bearing. Only the front side needs lube.

Engine parts, calm coversing of information, bacon, im sold 😎

The back side should be dry and clean. I have no doubt the internet mechanics disagree. Why? Because anything that there is a right and wrong way to do the internet will insist you do wrong

I've worked on enough engines and seen plenty of spun bearings. Definitely do not oil the back of a bearing. This produces hydraulic pressure between the bearing and the rod and changes the oil clearance. Never oil or grease the back of a bearing. Keep it dry.

No dont ever oil the back side of rod or crankshaft bushings it can throw off ur torque specs plus u cannot compress a liquid it wont squeeze out otherwise ur absolutely correct

I've been told by a couple of engine builders that I should get the surfaces surgically clean, and then use transmission fluid behind the bearing. Why? I have absolutely no idea, and they had no reasoning whatsoever either.
I'll never oil behind the bearing, and they'll never leave them dry. We all build engines that last beyond break-in so it clearly *shouldn't* make a difference.

I work at a big warehouse that sells these.

One thing to note on aluminum con rod there a locating pin in the bottom shell and you need to drill the bearings to install them

if oil touch that metal it is to be oiled,
if coolant is to touch metal then it is to be fill with coolant,
if there is a feul it goes in the rail and cylinder
